Duncraig Castle was built in 1866 by Sir Alexander Matheson, who acquired a vast fortune trading in the Far East. Retiring at the age of 36, he served as a Member of Parliament and was created a baronet in 1882. Matheson bought large tracts of the Highlands, and at one stage owned 122,000 acres. Duncraig Castle was built to entertain his friends and acquaintances on a grand scale. Matheson considered a railway station to be essential for the convenience of his numerous guests, and arranged for the castle's own station to be built!

In the 1920’s Duncraig Castle became the home of Sir Daniel and Lady Hamilton. Following a spell as a naval hospital during the Second World War, the Hamilton’s bequeathed the castle to be used as a domestic science college for girls from the Highlands and islands of Western Scotland. 

More recently Duncraig Castle has been home to a rock star, then the Dobsons, who featured in the Reality TV series ‘The Dobsons of Duncraig’. The castle has also been used by crews filming the popular TV series 'Hamish Macbeth', and the movie 'Mr Lonely' was filmed in the castle and grounds.
